Makeup Essentials: Part 1 πŸ“

Whether you're a beauty expert yourself or someone now beginning to explore the world of makeup, I'm pretty sure if you have any social media platform like Instagram or Facebook you've seen a lot of videos about new makeup tips and products worth trying. It's no secret that makeup artists can achieve magic (or voodoo, depending on who you're speaking toπŸ˜…) and transform any face. This flood of information can be extremely overwhelming so I've compiled a list of tips and products I found most useful for you including links to the products below.

Face Preparation
  • Moisturize! Whether it's a day or night cream, find a product that works for you. Day creams with SPF tend to reflect light when flash photography is used so beware if you know you're going to be taking pics. Our skin is constantly changing depending on what we eat, drink, how we exercise, how we sleep and how we feel so ensure the product you choose can suit these changes or switch it up if necessary! My favourite moisturizer is Ole Henrikson's Truth Serum which is absorbed instantly and penetrates to the deeper layers of the skin,  providing long-term benefits. It's perfect if you have sensitive skin also as there are calming properties in the serum.
  • If you have dry or extra-dry skin,  I suggest using a moisturizing mask. Whip an egg yolk (use an empty water bottle, place it over the yolk and squeeze for easy removal) and 1 tablespoon of extra virgin olive oil together. Apply to face, leave on for 20 mins and then rinse off with lukewarm water. This will leave you with the most beautiful glow and is very hydrating for your skin!
  • For normal to dry skin, a light moisturizer after using a tightening mask would create a fresh, tight appearance. Egg whites tighten the skin and wrinkles to give you a temporary facelift. Take one egg& separate the yolk and the white. Whisk the egg white until frothy and apply all over the face. Leave it on for 20 mins. Wash off with lukewarm water and immediately apply your moisturizer, then makeup.
  • If you have oily skin, use an astringent to remove excess oil pollution from the skin. This will help any makeup you apply last longer.
  • Keep cotton swabs nearby to correct mistakes, blend makeup under the eye and remove any  "gunk". Always moisten to prevent stray fibres from ending up in your eyes.
Foundation & Powder

The different types of foundations are:
  • If you want full coverage, use creme foundation. If you want a medium coverage, use liquid foundation and if you want light coverage, use sheer foundation.
  • If your foundation formula is oil based, always shake before applying and if it is too oily, try adding a few drops of astringent to cut down the oiliness. This will make the foundation a bit sheerer.
  • Some people use their fingers to apply foundation but always use a brush or a sponge to blend it into the skin, creating a flawless finish. Sponges are used for removing excess product and blending to prevent an artificial, heavy look. I recommend using a Beauty Blender.
  • Applying a little foundation to the eyelid followed by loose powder creates a smooth surface for eyeshadows to glide on. This also makes blending easier and the application last longer.
  • If in photographs you notice your face is white and your chest and neck is tan, remember that flash photography reflects light off the face when foundation and powder are applied and the raw skin of your chest and neck absorbs light. Blend the foundation all over face, into your jawline and slightly onto the neck. This will prevent the distinct line between the two and set with loose powder. Try using Ben Nye's Banana Powder or Laura Mercier's Translucent Powder.
  • Always tap off excess powder from your brush to avoid an uneven distribution.
