There are many reasons why dark circles would appear under your eyes:
- Lack of sleep 💤, stress & a hectic lifestyle.
- Allergies, asthma and eczema cause the eyes to itch which can contribute to dark circles because of rubbing or scratching the eyes.
- A bad diet/ lack of nutrients can also contribute to the discolouration of the area around the eyes. A lack of mineral iron, in particular, can cause dark circles because you're not getting enough oxygen to the body's tissues.
- Genetics can cause discolouration around the eyes. Skin pigmentation on the upper part of the cheekbone and under the eyes can lead to the appearance of dark circles.
- Sun damage causes excess pigmentation due to sunburn so always wear sunscreen.
- Age! Let's face it. The older you get, your skin loses extra collagen, becomes thinner and more translucent thus showing the veins under your eyes more.
- Bone structure - some people have deep set bone structure and it creates a shadow under the eyes.
- Finally, one of the reasons why we all have dark circles is because the skin around the eyelids is the thinnest skin on the body. When blood passes through the veins close to the surface of the skin, it produces a blue-ish tint. So the more translucent your skin is, the darker the circle will appear.
