Sheet Masks Review - Part 1: I'm Real

If you're a lover of sheet masks, I set out some budget-friendly sachets packed with powerhouse ingredients below that I've used in the past and loved. This is Part 1 of a 3 Part series and the focus of this post is on Korean skincare sheet masks.

TONYMOLY I'm Real Sheet Masks are fairly cheap and readily available. There are 21 mask types available in total but unfortunately, most of the text on the packaging is in Korean which makes figuring out which one to use a problem. Thankfully, each mask contains a one-line description in English of what the mask promises to do. Aside from that, the packaging for these masks are designed to capture your attention and is very creative and cute.

Generally, I have dry skin and I'm prone to breakouts, blackheads and redness. The following 7 sheet masks have helped me control my breakouts and reduce redness a lot while making my skin more supple and beautiful. They are gentle enough for sensitive skin as well.

1. Hydrating Lavender
Lavender extract is said to relax, soothe and hydrate the skin. This 3-layer pulp sheet is filled with natural ingredients and soaked in different types of enriched essences to yield maximum hydration for your skin. The serum is milky and the scent was very pleasant.

I kept the mask on for the recommended 30 minutes and I gently patted the excess essence onto my face and neck and went to sleep. My skin was looking tired and dull the night I applied the mask and in the morning, my skin looked healthy and moisturised! Overall, I was very happy with the results of this mask and would recommend it to anyone who has dull, dry skin in need of hydration.

2. Vitalizing Rose
This mask promises to "provide revitalizing energy to tired skin". Before I tried the mask, I assumed that meant providing some glow to dull skin and boy was I correct. There is a LOT of serum in this mask which was practically soaked when I pulled it out. The mask itself is almost clear (like rice paper) when placed on the skin. Although the recommended wear time is 20-30 mins, I wore it for almost an hour before the serum dried out and there was even more serum left when I took the mask off!

The scent is sooo lovely and really lives up to the rose scent promised. Overall, I was pretty happy with the results of this mask. It made my skin feel firmer/bouncier and there was a noticeable glow afterwards. The downside was that it left a heavy residue on my skin so much so that I wanted to wash my face afterwards. I usually let the product soak into the skin so that was a bit uncomfortable. I recommend using this mask if you're looking for firmer skin and an overall glow.

3. Skin Purifying Makgeolli
Makgeolli is a traditional Korean drink made from fermented rice. It contains alcohol, variants of makgeolli which is used in ancestral rites in Korea and is said to be slightly sweet. Makgeolli contains as many probiotic cultures as 100 cups of yoghurt, making it excellent for healthy skin. Korean women drink this to prevent ageing and wrinkles and it is also applied directly to the skin. This mask promises to make "uneven skin tone look radiant and glowing".

When I opened the packaging, the scent (which is both sweet but medicinal at the same time) hit me. Up to now, I can't place it. The serum for this mask is opaque and milky and when I applied the mask, it was cooling and tingly on my skin. It did not do much for my breakouts but my skin was noticeably brighter and even-toned immediately afterwards. All in all, this is a solid mask that would be great for uneven skin tones or sensitive skin prone to redness.

4. Pore Care Red Wine
This mask is one of my favourites! Its English description promises to purify the skin while tightening enlarged pores and it delivers on this promise. After using this mask, I noticed the redness on my face was less and there was a decrease in the size of my pimples. There were no visible pores on my face and my skin was glowing. Overall, the serum is watery with a bit of tackiness to it so it leaves a film on your skin after you use it. I recommend you rinse your hands and face with a bit of warm water after you remove the mask. This mask is great for acne-prone skin.

5. Luminating Pearl
I was very curious to try this mask because I always try to maintain a glowy complexion which is what this mask promises. Specifically, the mask promises to make "skin look clear and glowing". The serum was clear and a bit runny but there wasn't an excessive amount in the package. The scent of the mask was a bit overwhelming and I ended up tearing the part of the mask under my nose because it wasn't very pleasant.

Overall, this mask did disappoint me. I had a breakout when I used it and I can't say there was a noticeable reduction in my acne or redness. But my skin did have a really subtle glow afterwards. If you have normal skin and don't need too much acne control, then I recommend this mask for you.

6. Skin Soothing Calendula
This mask promises to help soothe troubled skin so I used it when my redness was acting up and I had a breakout. The Calendula extract is said to help calm the skin and is great for sensitive skin. It balances the oil and moisture of sensitive skin resulting in a toned finish. The serum smelled great and did not feel sticky at all on my skin. My redness and inflammation were reduced and my skin looked smooth and glowing. Overall, I was very happy with the results from this mask and I recommend it to anyone who has dull, acne prone skin.

7. Luminating Lotus
I was a bit wary of this mask because of my experience with the Luminating Pearl mask. The serum was very thick, almost like jelly unlike the runny consistency of the Pearl mask. There was excess serum which I ended up rubbing onto my skin before applying the mask. When applied, there was no noticeable tingling or cooling sensation and there was a very faint floral scent. I could pick up hints of jasmine almost but it was not overwhelming.

When I removed the mask, I noticed a glow on my skin although there was a noticeable residue which I ended up washing off with water. Just like the Pearl mask, there was the benefit of that afterglow but I did feel like it didn't do much for my skin. If your skin is very dry, this would be a great mask for you.
